Experience
Stephen’s career in politics began as a campus organizer for Democratic US Senate candidate Harvey Gantt, who challenged Jesse Helms in 1996. From there, he founded the North Carolina A&T State University – College Democrats chapter, and was later awarded an internship in the Clinton White House.
He has since worked on a number of campaigns and legislative offices of key local Democrats including, US Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, State Representative Sylvester Turner and US Trade Representative Ron Kirk.
Stephen is a member of numerous organizations such as, Young Democrats of America, the Fort Bend Democratic Club, Fort Bend Black Democrats, the Houston Area Urban League, and the Fort Bend Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. He also serves on the Boards of the Youth Development Center of Houston, the Fifth Ward Enrichment Program and Missouri City’s Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone.
Stephen is married to proud Southern University alum Monique St. Amant-Mathis, and is the father of Stephen III and Mathis.
